On Thursday 14th of November 2024 Prof. Helberger gave a public lecture about
AI in Media: Risk-Based Approaches and the Future of Democracy
In her lecture, Prof. Natali Helberger highlighted how debates on AI in Europe are often approached from a risk-based perspective, particularly regarding the impact on fundamental rights and society, such as the use of AI in journalism. She addressed the European governance approach to AI, which also focuses heavily on risk assessment and mitigation. Prof. Helberger critically discussed the limits of this risk-based approach and demonstrated how insights from law and communication science can be integrated into AI governance. She also raised the question of whether the use of AI in the media sector should be considered particularly high-risk.
