Prof. Dr. T. Margoni
Prof. Dr. Thomas Margoni is Research Professor of Intellectual Property Law at the Faculty of Law and Criminology, University of Leuven (KU Leuven), where he is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Centre for IT & IP Law (CiTiP).
Thomas' research concentrates on the relationship between law and technology, with a focus on comparative and European copyright law. Currently, he is exploring the transformations occurring in the creation, access, and distribution of information brought by technologies and connected cultural processes, including AI, platforms and datafication.
Before joining CiTiP and KU Leuven in 2020, Thomas was a Senior Lecturer in Intellectual Property and Internet Law and co-director of CREATe at the School of Law, University of Glasgow (UK) where he also convened the LLM programme in Intellectual Property and the Digital Economy; a Lecturer in law at the University of Stirling (UK); and a Senior Researcher at the Institute for Information Law (IViR), University of Amsterdam (NL).
He publishes and teaches in the field of European and international intellectual property, copyright, designs, and Internet law. Thomas sits in the editorial board of the Copyright Evidence Wiki, of the CREATe working paper series, is a Fellow at CREATe, at the UK Higher Education Academy, a member of the Global Expert Network on Copyright User Rights, and of the main international intellectual property organisations such as ALAI (BLACA), ATRIP, ELI and EPIP. He has been a Marie Sklodowska-Curie fellow (currently an alumni), a Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University, a visiting professor at various leading research centres in Europe and regularly participates to initiatives in the areas of intellectual property, new technologies and digital rights. Since 2023 he has been a research Fellow at the Institute for Information Law (IViR).
